USC Builds Lead to Seven Strokes at Ihlanfeldt Invitational

Oct. 8, 2002

Seattle - USC built its first-place lead to a seven-stroke margin over Washington and Pepperdine heading into Wednesday's final round of play at the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational at the Tacoma Country and Golf Club.

The Trojans Becky Lucidi, the defending U.S. Open Champion, struggled during her second round, posting a score of 4-over 77, but remains the individual leader with a one-stroke margin over Pepperdine's Katherine Hull. Lucidi is at 4-under 142 thanks to an opening round of 65, establishing a new course record. Hull, who opened play with a 71, shot 72 during Tuesday's round to stand at 3-under 143 on the par-73 course.

'I didn't play very well today,' Lucidi said. 'I didn't putt very well. Going into tomorrow I just want to hit fairways and greens. If the putts drop, that's great.'

Lucidi said her main goal is seeing the Trojans keep their distance from the remainder of the field.

'This is great, the way we're playing in only the second tournament of the year,' she said. 'We're in the lead with a seven stroke lead heading into the final round. It will be good for us to play with Washington and Pepperdine on Wednesday. I think we just need to stick to our game plan. If you look at all the scores, you realize that par is a good score. We just have to keep our goals simple and we'll play well.'

Washington is led by sophomore Paige Mackenzie in ninth place at 2-over 148. Mackenzie shot 3-over 76 during her second round. The Huskies' Louise Friberg is 11th at 3-over 149 while Lindsay Morgan is 18th at 5-over 151. UW freshman Sung Ea Lee is 22nd overall at 6-over 152. Michelle Grafos is 31st at 10-over 156.

Husky coach Mary Lou Mulflur knows exactly why her team trails USC by seven strokes.

'I think if we can play the par fives better, we'll be fine,' Mulflur said. 'We've given up 11 shots to USC over the past two days on the par fives. They're six under on those holes and were five over. That's a big difference right there. We're leading the field on the par threes and we're leading the field on the par fours. If we play the par fives the way we're capable, we'll make a run at them.

'We need to be a little more aggressive and a little bit sharper,' Mulflur says. 'We're close.'

The final round of play will start at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday.
