STANFORD (9-1-0 overall) begins defense of its 2001 Pac-10 title this weekend, when all six teams begin Conference play... Friday's key matchup features OREGON STATE (9-1-0), winners of seven in a row, at the red-hot CALIFORNIA Golden Bears (7-2-1) , who have reeled off five straight wins... The Beavers enter the Top-25 for the first time this season, checking in at No. 18... Cal is ranked 15th... A total of four Pac-10 teams are ranked this week: No. 1/No. 5 Stanford (NSCAA/Soccer America), No. 16/No. 5 UCLA, NR/No. 15 California and NR/No. 18 Oregon State... FRESNO STATE (3-4-3) will play its first ever Pac-10 game Sunday at UCLA, as it looks to snap a three-game losing skid to the Bruins that dates back to 1997.

WELLS NAMED PAC-10 PLAYER OF WEEK
UCLA junior goalkeeper Zach Wells has been named the Pac-10 Men's Soccer Player of the Week for Oct. 1-7.
Wells, from Costa Mesa, Calif., withstood 17 shots and made four saves to lead the Bruins to a 0-0 double-overtime tie of No. 1-ranked St. John's Oct. 6. The shutout was the first by a St. John's opponent this season. In a 1-1 double-overtime tie at No. 13 Rutgers, Wells stopped a season-high eight shots. On the weekend, he posted a 0.41 goals against average, dropping his overall GAA to 0.73.
The Bruins (5-1-2 overall, 0-0-0 Pac-10), ranked sixth by Soccer America and 16th by the NSCAA, hosts Fresno State Sunday in the Pac-10 opener for both teams.
This is the second weekly honor for Wells and the 11th all-time Player of the Week honor for UCLA.

CALIFORNIA: The Bears defeated San Jose State 2-1 to collect their sixth straight win. Sophomore Mike Munoz notched a goal and an assist in the win. He leads the team with five goals on the season. Cal will attempt to tie the school record for consecutive wins (8) this week as it opens Pac-10 play by hosting Oregon State and Washington.
FRESNO STATE: Fresno opens Pac-10 play Sunday at UCLA Noon. The Bulldogs look to snap a three-game losing streak to the Bruins, dating back to 1997. Fresno State is 8-13-3 all-time vs. UCLA. The Bulldogs are coming off a 1-1 tie at Sacramento State last week. Fresno was dominating in the first half, allowing just one shot. Senior F Kupono Low scored his second goal of the season against the Hornets.
OREGON STATE: The Beavers extended their win streak to a school-record seven games with a 4-2 win over Saint Mary's Oct. 6. The win also added to the best start in school history (9-1-0). Senior Aaron McHardy scored his sixth goal of the season , while junior Alan Gordon added a goal and an assist. Gordon has 22 points (9 goals/4 assists) on the year, which ties for seventh on OSU's all-time single-season list. With a pair of wins this weekend, OSU would tie the school record nine-game unbeaten streak.
STANFORD: The Cardinal defeated San Jose State 2-1 in double-overtime last week, and open Pac-10 play this weekend at Washington and Oregon State. Senior Roger Levesque paces Stanford with 22 points through 10 matches (5 goals, 12 assists). Johanes Maliza has scored a team-leading six goals.
UCLA: The Bruins escaped meetings with No. 13 Rutgers and No. St. John's unbeaten, playing to ties in both contests at the Rutgers Tournament. Senior F Tim Pierce scored his fourth goal in two games, leading the Bruins to a 1-1 tie at No. 13 Rutgers. UCLA held top-ranked St. John's scoreless, its 4-0 win over Old Dominion in the tournament's opening round.
WASHINGTON: The Huskies battled No. 16 Portland to a 1-1 tie in their final non-conference match last week. Freshman GK Chris Eylander made five saves against the Pilots, just one shy of his season high. UW opens Pac-10 play at Stanford and California this weekend. Sophomore F Brett Wiesner and senior F Dayo Oyetuga are tied for the team lead with three goals on the season.
