Ducks Advance to Main Draw at Icy Hot/ITA All-American Championships
Oct. 9, 2002
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Despite a pair of losses and a bout of sickness, three Ducks advanced to the main draw at the Icy Hot/ITA All-American Championships, beginning Thursday. Preseason No. 63-ranked Manuel Kost will play in the singles draw, while Sven Swinnen and Oded Teig will compete in the doubles draw.
All three players were ill entering Wednesday's competition, which head coach Chris Russell said was the result of something the players ate Tuesday evening. Kost played well in his qualifying match and won the first set in a tiebreaker, but could not hold on, eventually losing the match, 6-7, 6-2, 6-2. Swinnen and Teig struggled with their upset stomachs and lost 8-4 in their match.
'It was an interesting day for us,' Russell said. 'They should feel a little better tomorrow.'
The Ducks qualified for the main draw by virtue of the 'lucky loser' entry. The tournament referee informed Russell of the team's good fortune Wednesday around noon, giving the team some time to recover from the sickness.
Healthy or not, the competition will be stiff for the Ducks. Kost will match up with preseason No. 92 Oliver Levant of Florida in the first round Thursday at 10 a.m. Swinnen and Teig will take on Tulsa's tandem of Ryan Livesay and Dustin Taylor Thursday at 5 p.m.
'Everyone from here on out is very good,' Russell said. 'In fact, everyone the last two rounds has been very good.'
There are 64 players in the singles draw and 32 pairs in the doubles draw. The tournament finals for both draws will take place Sunday.
