ITA Men's All-American Kicks Off Tomorrow

Los Angeles - UCLA junior men's tennis player Tobias Clemens will be vying for his first collegiate grand slam title Thursday when the 2002 Icy Hot/ITA Men's All-American Tennis Championships kickoff in Chattanooga, Tenn.
Clemens, seeded No. 2 in the 64-player singles draw, will face Georgia's Nicolas Boeker in tomorrow's first round.
Newcomer Chris Lam, who transferred to UCLA this year from Santa Clara and has three years of eligibility remaining, qualified for the main draw Wednesday by upsetting Rene-Charles Combette of Mississippi State, 7-5, 7-6(6). Combette was the No. 1 seed in the qualifying draw.
Lam also defeated Wake Forest's David Bere, 7-5, 6-2 in the first round of qualifying on Tuesday. He will face ninth-seeded Todd Widom of Miami in Thursday's main draw.
The Icy Hot/ITA Men's All-American Championships is not only the largest single tournament of this season in collegiate tennis, with over 300 competitors, but also the first of three national championship events at the Division I level during the 2002-03 collegiate tennis season.
The Icy Hot ITA Men's All-American Championships offer the first national singles and doubles titles of the season, and are followed by the Omni Hotels/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships in November and the third event is the season-ending NCAA Championships in May (the women's counterpart to the Icy Hot/ITA Men's All-American Championships, the Riviera Women's All-American Championships, is hosted by the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades).
