Men's All-American Tennis Championships Get Underway

Chattanooga, TN - Sophomore Conor Niland and Junior Balazs Veress will represent the Golden Bears in the opening round of the 2002 ITA All-American Tennis Championships, taking place Oct. 10-13 at the Champions Club in Chattanooga, TN. Senior Robert Kowalczyk reached the final round of qualifying, before losing to Georgia's Nic Boeker, 6-2; 7-5, effectively ending his run.
The No. 82-ranked Niland will challenge Tulsa's Dustin Taylor in the round of 64 at 9:00 a.m. (EDT) on Thursday, Oct. 10. If Niland wins that match, he will advance to the round of 32 for the opportunity to face the winner of the match between the top-seed Jesse Witten of Kentucky and Virginia Tech's Saber Kadiri. That match would take place at 12:30 p.m. (EDT) later the same day.
Veress, ranked No. 71 in the country, will square off against Mark Dietrich of Tennessee in first round action at 11 a.m. (EDT) on Thursday, Oct. 10. A win would propel Veress to the round of 32 match with the prospect of facing the winner of the match between Louisville's Cody Conley and the 15th-seeded Matt Hanlin of Washington. That round of 32 match would take place at 2:30 p.m. (EDT) that same afternoon.
In doubles competition, the tournament's No. 6-seed, Veress and Kowalczyk, will team together to face Florida's duo of Oliver Levant and Eleazar Magallan at 5:00 p.m. (EDT) on Thursday, Oct. 10. A win in that round of 32 match would pit the Cal pair against either Middle Tennessee State or Texas on Friday, Oct. 11.
In other men's tennis action, seniors Jeff King and Kevin Patrick as well as sophomore Patrick Briaud will all compete at the Bulldog Classic taking place this weekend, Oct. 11-13, in Fresno. A total of 64 players from 12 teams will be competing in the event taking place at both the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center at Fresno State and Clovis West High School.
In the round of 64, King will face Niclas Otte of Pacific on Friday at 10:15 a.m., Patrick will challenge Cal Poly's Stacy Meronoff at 8:15 a.m. and Briaud will compete against the ninth-seeded Michael Duong of Pacific at 9:45 a.m.
