Oct. 9, 2002

PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. - Daria Panova, the No. 44-ranked player in the preseason rankings, defeated UCLA's Jackie Carleton in three sets, 6-1, 6-7, 6-4, to advance in the backdraw at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships. It was the third straight three-set match for Panova.

'There were a couple close calls, but she stuck it out,' assistant coach Kathy Sell said. 'She played well and fought hard.'

Panova continues her run in the backdraw with a Thursday match against preseason No. 88 Emily Marker of Maryland.
