Amber Liu Continues To Advance In Riviera/ITA Women's Championships

Pacific Palisades, Calif. - Stanford freshman Amber Liu defeated Duke's Julie DeRoo in three sets, 2-6, 6-1, 6-4, to advance to the second round of the 2002 Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships on Thursday afternoon. Liu's victory marks her third consecutive and will play top-seed Vilmarie Castellvi of Tennessee on Friday.
Stanford's sixth-seed Erin Burdette fell in straight sets to Amanda Johnson of Duke 6-3, 6-4 in the first round. Duke's DeRoo then defeated Burdette in a walkover.
No. 7 Kate Pinchbeck of North Carolina defeated Cardinal Lauren Barnikow 6-4, 6-1. Barnikow will face No. 8 Adria Engel from Arizona State in the first round of consolation competition tomorrow.
In doubles action, Stanford's team of Barnikow and Burdette fell to Kentucky's Nathalie Roels and Sara Witten, 8-4.
Competition will continue tomorrow at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades.
