Bruins Defeat Oregon State 3-0 in Pauley Pavilion

LOS ANGELES - The 13th-ranked UCLA women's volleyball team recorded 12 blocks on the way to a 3-0 win over Oregon State on Thursday night in Pauley Pavilion. Game scores were 35-33, 30-22, 30-18. Three Bruins had double-figure kills in the match, led by Brynn Murphy and Lauren Fendrick with 13 apiece. With the win, the Bruins are now 11-6 on the season with a 4-3 Pac-10 record. Oregon State falls to 6-9 (1-5 Pac-10).
In game one, UCLA jumped out to five-point lead at 13-8, but Oregon State chipped away to tie the game at 23-all. The game went back-and-forth from there, and was tied as late as 32-all before UCLA put away the opening game by a 35-33 margin. Brittany Ringel had six of her 10 kills in game one, and in a rare start, freshman Teryn Spragg downed five kills on 11 swings and recorded three digs in the opening game of the match.
UCLA took the lead early in game two and never looked back, putting together a five-point rally behind the service of Spragg to open up a 10-4 lead. Oregon State would close to within two points as late as 22-20, but could not complete the comeback as UCLA took a 2-0 lead to the locker rooms with a 30-22 second game victory.
As a team, the Bruins recorded five of their 12 team blocks in the third and final game of the match, as the Beavers hit .000 for the game with nine kills and nine errors on 38 attacks, completing the evening with a 30-18 third game win.
Angela Eckmier led the Bruins with seven block assists in the match, followed closely by Brynn Murphy with six. Chrissie Zartman led UCLA with 10 digs in the match, while Heather Cullen served three aces to lead all players. Murphy and Fendrick downed 13 kills apiece, while Ringel was also in double figures with 10. Murphy hit a match-high .522 in the contest, with 13 kills and one error in 23 attacks.
UCLA returns to action on Friday night with a 7 pm first serve scheduled against Oregon. The match will be broadcast live on www.uclabruins.com
