Beavers Lose Heartbreaker To WSU, 1-0 In Double Overtime
Oct. 11, 2002
CORVALLIS, Ore. - -
The Oregon State women's soccer team (7-3-2 overall, 0-1-0 Pacific-10) opened Pacific-10 Conference play with a 1-0 setback in double-overtime at the hands of Washington State (7-4-0, 1-0-0) on Friday at Lorenz Field.
WSU's Katrina Stroh capitalized on a corner kick to the far post from Christie Spear in the 104th minute for the win.
The call leading to the corner kick itself generated a good deal of controversy, as the linesman signaled for a goal kick, but was overruled by the head referee and a corner kick was awarded.
'Both coaches agreed that it should have been a goal kick,' OSU coach Steve Fennah said. 'The linesman called a goal kick and the referee overruled it.'
The Beavers played the final 58 minutes of the match with 10 players after defender Whitney Horn was issued her second yellow card in the 46th minute.
Despite being outshot 25-12 for the game, OSU keeper Jo Fletcher, who made nine saves, and the defense fended off several WSU attacks.
'With only 10 players on the field, we did a tremendous job,' OSU coach Steve Fennah said. 'Give WSU a ton of credit, they had discipline and made things very difficult for us today. It's very tough to combat a team like that with 10 players.
'I felt that we started to play well just before the first half ended, and then we lost the momentum when Whitney was sent off.
'Having said that, we competed very well and gave a great effort today - we kept our intensity level very high,' Fennah said.
The Beavers continue Pac-10 play Sunday when they host Washington at 2 p.m.
