Michael Jurgensen Named To Danish National Team
Oct. 11, 2002
CORVALLIS, Ore. - -
Jurgensen will complete his eligibility and finish his senior year at Oregon State before joining the national team in his native country of Denmark this summer.
Also, former OSU All-American Anthony Arvidson has qualified for the Buy.com Tour's Gila River Classic at Wildhorse Pass Resort in Chandler, Ariz., Oct. 10-13.
Jurgensen will maintain his amateur status while on the national team, and will compete in international events.
'I'm proud of Michael,' Watts said. 'He's worked extremely hard to get to this point and has shown a great commitment to improving his game.
'Playing on the Danish National Team will give him more exposure and will allow him to fine-tune his game in preparation for making the jump to the professional level,' Watts said.
Over the summer, Jurgensen played in six events in Denmark, winning three, finishing second in two, and placing third in one. Those numbers ranked him second in the country.
Jurgensen's experience with the Danish National Team will allow him entry into several of the major European tournaments.
'I've been close the last couple of years,' Jurgensen said. 'I think being second in the country made it hard to overlook when it came time to select the team.
'I've learned a lot from coach Watts,' Jurgensen said. 'The mental side of my game has improved a great deal; I'm much tougher mentally than when I got here. Every time I tee it up, I feel very confident.
'Right now, the most important thing is Oregon State and playing well in our next tournament,' Jurgensen said of OSU's upcoming tournament at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational Oct. 14-15.
Arvidson, who earned honorable mention All-America and National Golf Coaches Association Scholar All-American honors as a senior in 2000-01, qualified for the Gila River Classic at Wildhorse Pass Resort in Chandler, Ariz, played at the Whirlwind Golf Club.
The tournament will be Arvidson's first competition on the Buy.com Tour, which is one level below the PGA Tour.
Arvidson competed on the Gateway Tour prior to this weekend, and will enter PGA Tour Qualifying school Oct. 22-25 at the Bayonet Course in Seaside, Calif.
