No. 5 Cal Falls to No. 12 UCLA, 1-0, in Pac-10 Opener
Oct. 11, 2002
LOS ANGELES - No. 5 California opened the Pac-10 season with a 1-0 road loss to No. 12 UCLA Friday night at Drake Stadium. The Golden Bears fell to 7-3-1 (0-1 Pac-10) as they were shut out for the first time all season, while the Bruins improved to 9-2-0 (1-0 Pac-10).
UCLA's Lindsay Greco headed in the only goal of the game in the 25th minute. Jill Oakes was credited with the assist.
With under a minute to play in the game, Cal had an excellent shot to tie the game and send it into overtime with a free kick one-yard outside the penalty box. Schott's kick went off the post and back into the field of play, but the Bears couldn't deposit the rebound into the back of the net.
Cal goalkeeper Sani Post made six saves to keep the game close but still suffered her first loss (4-1) in the Bears' net this year. UCLA's goalkeeper Sarah Lombardo saved Cal's only shot on goal, which came on a second half run down the right flank by Hamm.
The Bears look to rebound against No. 15 USC Sunday at 1 p.m.
