Top-Ranked USC Defeats OSU In Three
Oct. 11, 2002
Los Angeles - Keao Burdine's 15 kills and .542 hitting percentage lifted the No. 1 USC volleyball team to a 3-0 win over Oregon State on Friday night. The Women of Troy defeated the Beavers 30-22, 30-21 and 30-19.
Despite the loss, coach Nancy Somera was pleased with how the Beavers played against the top-ranked team in the country, especially after a poor performance against No. 13 UCLA on Thursday.
'We played with a much more competitive mentality tonight. We need to bring that every night, regardless of the opponent,' Somera said. 'We played hard and did some smart things against a really big, physical volleyball team.'
Michele Solomon led OSU (6-10, 1-6 Pac-10) with nine kills and a .348 hitting percentage, and Allison Lawrence chipped in eight kills. The Beavers hit .083 with 33 kills, while USC hit .291 with 57 kills. April Ross joined Burdine in double-figures with 14 kills and a .333 hitting percentage for the Women of Troy (14-0, 7-0).
Nikki Neuburger continued to dominate defensively, recording a match-high 14 digs. Lianne Dela Cruz and Megan McMillan each had nine for OSU, which finished the night with 49. USC, led by Burdine's 12, ended up with 54 digs as the Beavers were outdug for the second time in as many nights.
