UW Women Open Pac-10 Soccer Season With Win at Oregon
Oct. 11, 2002
EUGENE, Ore. - Sophomore forward Tina Frimpong scored twice and junior Melissa Bennett set up both goals to tie the school's single-season assist record as 20th-ranked Washington defeated Oregon 2-1 Friday in the Pacific-10 Conference women's soccer opener for both teams at Pap Field.
The Huskies (6-4-2) were victorious in their conference opener for the fourth straight season. They won the 2000 Pac-10 championship and tied for second place last season. Oregon (1-8-1, 0-1) remained winless in seven all-time meetings with Washington.
Bennett increased her conference-leading assist total to 12, a figure that tied the school record established by Theresa Wagner during the 2000 season. Bennett has seven more assists than any other Pac-10 player this year.
Despite the lofty assist total, Bennett is better known for scoring goals after amassing a Washington state prep record with 166 career goals at Seattle Christian High School. Melissa broke the record of 152 goals previously held by her sister Tami Bennett, a 2000 UW graduate.
Frimpong opened the scoring in the 18th minute. She received a pass from Bennett and drilled a low, 12-yard shot inside the left post.
The Ducks tallied the equalizer at 27:42 on a penalty kick by Lindsey Werdell. Just four minutes later Arlene Tuttle drew her second yellow card and was ejected, forcing the Ducks to compete one-player down over the final 58 minutes.
Frimpong netted the game-winner at 75:09, once again off a pass from Bennett. She recorded her team-leading sixth goal on a 17-yard blast from the center of the field into the left side of the goal.
Senior goalkeeper Hope Solo, the 2001 Pac-10 Player of the Year, registered one save for the Huskies. Sarah Peters had five saves for Oregon which was outshot by a 12-6 margin.
The Huskies remain on the road to play at Oregon State on Sunday at 2 p.m.
