Vlaski Advances To Final Eight Of ITA Men's All-American Championships

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.- Washington men's tennis sophomore Alex Vlaski picked up a pair of wins today to advance to the main draw quarterfinals of the Icy Hot/ITA Men's All-American Championships held at the Champions Club in Chattanooga, Tenn.
Vlaski, the No. 11 seed, will face the only unseeded player to advance to the final eight Saturday, Illinois' Phil Stolt, at 10:30 a.m. ET. Vlaski defeated both opponents today in straight sets, taking care of Angelo Niculescu (South Carolina), 6-4, 7-5, in the second round and upset No. 6 Bobby Reynolds (Vanderbilt), 6-2, 6-3, in the third round.
Also competing in main draw singles action was senior Matt Hanlin who won his second round match with Balazs Veress from Cal, in straight sets 6-1, 6-1. Hanlin, the No. 15 seed, fell in the third round to the No. 2 seed, Tobias Clemens (UCLA), 2-6, 7-5, 7-5.
After winning its first and second round matches yesterday, the doubles team of Vlaski and senior Ari Strasberg lost in the quarterfinals to the team of Lester Cook and Ante Matijevic (Texas A&M), 8-4.
The Icy Hot/ITA Men's All-American Championships and its women's counterpart - the Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships - are the first of three national championship tournaments for collegiate tennis during the 2002-03 season. The two other tournaments (for singles and doubles only) are the Omni Hotels/ITA National Indoor Championships in November and the season-ending NCAA Championships in May.
