Men's Soccer Falls 2-1 In Overtime To No. 15 Cal
Oct. 13, 2002
BERKELEY, Calif. - Mike Munoz scored the game-winning goal in the first overtime period, lifting No. 15 Cal over the Washington men's soccer team, 2-1 and handing the Huskies their second-straight Pac-10 loss in Berkeley, Calif., Sunday afternoon.
Washington drops to 3-5-3 overall and 0-2 against Pac-10 opponents, while Cal improves to 9-2-1 overall and 2-0 in the Pac-10. UW opened Pac-10 play Friday night, losing by a shutout at Stanford, 2-0. With the win, the Golden Bears tied a school record with their eighth consecutive victory.
Munoz' goal came in the 95th minute of the game, a shot that hit off the right post and into the net past Husky junior goalkeeper Daniel Waltman. It was Cal's only shot on goal during overtime. Assists on the game-winner went to Pieter Berger and Nick Hatzke.
The first goal of the game was not scored until the 73rd minute, when Cal took a 1-0 advantage on a 20-yard blast from Hatzke. Three minutes later, Washington came back to tie on freshman defender Kevin Murray's second collegiate goal in the 76th minute. Murray scored on a header off a free kick from sophomore C.J. Klaas, last year's Pac-10 Freshman of the Year.
Waltman, getting the starting nod in goal today after holding Stanford scoreless in the second half Friday night, made a career high 10 saves. Last year, he made a total of 16 saves in seven games. Waltman thwarted Cal's best chance to win the game in regulation when he knocked a header by Pieter Berger over the crossbar in the 86th minute.
Eight of Washington's 10 shots came in the second half, with the Golden Bears holding the overall advantage 18-10.
Winless since its 3-2 victory over Marquette Sept. 27, Washington looks to get well at home as the Huskies return to Seattle to host Oregon State, Sunday, Oct. 20, at 2 p.m.
