Men's Golf Ninth After One Round Of Alister MacKenzie Invitational

Oregon State, led by Sean Deacon's 68, shot a 1-over-par 285 in the opening round of the Alister MacKenzie Invitational at the par-71 Meadow Club. The Beavers are in ninth place after one round.
The 17-team field was unable to complete second-round play before darkness and will finish the remainder of the second round as well as the final round Tuesday morning.
Deacon, with a 34-34-68, was one of three Beavers to break par in the opening round, as Michael Jurgensen and Daren Greig each signed for 70s and are tied for 26th in the 87-player field. Deacon is tied for 10th. Jurgensen broke par for the fifth time in 10 rounds this year.
With three individual rounds under par on Monday, the Beavers have 17 through 10 rounds this year; OSU had 24 for the entire 2001-02 season.
OSU, at 1-over 285, trails Oregon by three strokes, but leads Pac-10 rivals Washington,Stanford, and Washington State. OSU also leads regional competitors Pacific and Nevada.
UC-Irvine grabbed the tournament lead with a 12-under 272 and holds a one-stroke advantage over San Francisco.
Individually, UC-Irvine's Mike Lavery peppered the Meadow Club for a 64 and a one-shot lead over Oregon's John Ellis and USF's Robert Frye.
