Ellis Ties for Second at Alister MacKenzie Invitational

Oct. 15, 2002

FAIRFAX, Calif. - Oregon's John Ellis finished a career-best 8-under par to tie for second at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational, Tuesday at the par 71, 6,585-yard Meadow Club. Ellis had rounds of 68-72 Tuesday to go along with his career-best 65 from Monday for a three round total of 205.

The senior from San Jose, Calif., tied with UCLA's Roy Moon and Northwestern's Tom Johnson at 8-under, three strokes behind tournament champion Nick Watney of Fresno State. It was Ellis' highest finish since winning the Husky Invitational as a sophomore.

'John had a very good tournament,' said Oregon coach Steve Nosler. 'It was exciting to have John lead our team and to be in a position to challenge for the individual title. He and Mike Sica really played some solid golf for us.'

As a team, Oregon moved up three spots to fifth in the final standings at 7-over 859, as players had to complete Monday's second round -- suspended due to darkness -- prior to playing their final 18 Tuesday. Fresno State won the event at 11-under 841, followed by UCLA and Northwestern at 844 and host California at 852. Washington followed the Ducks at 862, with Colorado next at 865 and a trio of schools -- Oregon State, Nevada and San Francisco -- tied for eighth at 868.

'Overall, we played pretty fair,' said Nosler. 'The course was playing a lot tougher today due to the wind and some challenging pin placements, but we did ourselves some good down the road by beating a lot of teams from our district.'

Sica also had a strong finish for the Ducks. The junior from San Francisco, Calif., recorded rounds of 71-70 Tuesday to post the best finish of his career, a tie for 12th at 1-under 212. Sica's previous best finish was a tie for 17th at the Western Intercollegiate as a freshman. Junior Jimmy White, a South Eugene grad making his season debut, finished tied for 43rd at 221.

The Ducks wrap up the fall season Nov. 4-5 at the Prestige at Palm Desert in Palm Desert, Calif.
