Oct. 17, 2002
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State's 2002 baseball recruiting class has been ranked No. 29 in the nation by Collegiate Baseball newspaper. The list, which includes players entering school this fall to begin playing in the 2003 season, rates the top 30 classes in Division I.
'We felt this was an outstanding group we were bringing in this year, and it's nice to see that recognized by someone outside our program,' OSU head coach Pat Casey said. 'From what we've seen in the past month or so, there are a number of players who have come in and have a chance to make an immediate impact for us.'
The OSU recruiting class, which is currently involved in the Beavers' fall drills, includes infielder Tony Calderon (Orange, Calif./El Modeno HS, Santa Ana JC), outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury (Madras, Ore./Madras HS), shortstop/righthanded pitcher Cole Gillespie (West Linn, Ore./West Linn HS), shortstop Tyler Graham (Great Falls, Mont./C.M. Russell HS), shortstop Mark Jackson (Sacramento, Calif./Del Campo HS), lefthanded pitcher Todd Merz (Laguna Beach, Calif./Laguna Beach HS); catcher Billy Munich (El Macero, Calif./Jesuit HS); infielder Scott Nelson (Eugene, Ore./North Eugene HS); lefthanded pitcher and infielder Nathan Pendley (Albany, Ore./West Albany HS, Linn-Benton CC); infielder Robert Recuenco (Vancouver, B.C./St. Thomas Moore Collegiate HS, North Idaho JC) and righthanded pitcher Kurt Steele (Corvallis, Ore./Crescent Valley HS).
Oregon State will conclude fall baseball next week. The Beavers open their 2003 season Feb. 7 at California-Riverside; OSU will begin a 22-game home schedule on Feb. 25 against Portland.
