Volleyball Defeats California, 3-2

BERKELEY, Calif. -- The Washington volleyball team (12-5, 4-4) defeated California, 3-2 (18-30, 30-27, 25-30, 30-25, 15-12), this evening at Haas Pavilion. With the win, the Huskies tie last season's conference victory mark with four.

Sophomore Sanja Tomasevic (Uzice, Yugoslavia) led Washington with 23 kills and 14 digs. Senior co-captain Paige Benjamin (Redmond, Wash.) chipped in 19 kills to bring her career total to 1,015. Benjamin becomes just the 10th Husky to reach the coveted 1,000 mark and now ranks ninth on the school's all-time chart.

Senior co-captain Gretchen Maurer (San Clemente, Calif.) dished 59 assists in the win, to become just the fifth player in Washington history to tally 2,500 career assists. She now stands fourth on the all-time list.

Anchoring the Husky defense was junior Libba Lawrence (West Linn, Ore.) with a team-high 15 kills and freshman libero Candace Lee (Eugene, Ore.) with 12.

Washington faces its next challenge tomorrow night when it takes on No. 6 Stanford at 7:00 p.m.
