Women's Tennis Heads East to Saint Mary's Invitational

Oct. 17, 2002

Moraga, Calif. - Four Cal Bears will head East to the ITA Saint Mary's Invitational, to be held in Moraga this weekend, Oct. 18-20. Sophomores Brooke Borisoff, No. 9-seeded Carla Arguelles and Rio Del Rosario, as well as No. 5-seeded freshman Jessica Shu will participate in the fifth annual ITA SMC Invitational, as this year's tournament boasts it's largest and strongest field of talent ever. All four Bears have first-round byes.

Contributing to this year's noteworthy invitational meet are the participation of 64 singles players and 32 doubles teams from 11 schools, including the # 1-ranked Stanford, #12-ranked California, and #25-ranked Fresno State. The Bears look to repeat last year's strong showing, as Cal junior Jieun Jacobs took the tournament title, rallying to defeat Susanne Bertel of Pacific in three sets, 3-6, 6-4, 7-5.

In doubles action, Del Rosario and Shu will team together as they face Roberta Fessenko and Margarita Karnaukhova in Friday's round of 32 while the pair of Arguelles and Nicole Havlicek face Loyola Marymount's Jennifer Baker and Georgina Dirham.

Other schools that will be participating include Saint Mary's, #59-ranked Loyola Marymount, Santa Clara, San Francisco, the University of Nevada-Reno, San Jose State, UC Davis, Sacramento State, and the University of the Pacific.

The 2002 tournament will take place at the Timothy Korth Tennis Complex on the Saint Mary's campus starting on Friday, October 18. Matches will begin in the morning and will continue all day. Times for matches on Saturday and Sunday, October 19-20 will also begin in the morning and continue through the day.
