Cal Third After Opening Round of Stanford Pepsi Intercollegiate
Oct. 18, 2002
STANFORD - No. 24 California is in third place with a score of 296 after the first of three rounds of the Stanford Pepsi Intercollegiate Friday. The Golden Bears were one of three teams to shoot under 300 at the par 72, 6218 yard Stanford Golf Course. No. 32 UCLA sits atop the leader board at 293, while No. 12 Washington is second at 295.
No. 2 Vanderbilit is in fourth (302) and host No. 42 Stanford and No. 20 Georgia are tied for fifth at 303. No. 1 Arizona finds itself tied with No. 11 New Mexico for seventh at 307.
Cal senior Vikki Laing shot a one-under 71 to grab a four-way share of first place in the individual competition. Laing has been playing outstanding golf for the Bears this fall, leading them at their first two tournaments with a second and seventh-place showing.
New Mexico State's Alena Sharp, Vanderbilt's Courtney Wood and Georgia's Kelly Froelich also carded opening rounds of 71.
Also in the Top 10 for the Bears is junior Anna Temple, who fired a one-over 73. However, her round doesn't count towards Cal's team score because she is competing as an individual.
The second round tees off tomorrow at 8 a.m.
