Volleyball Drops To No. 6 Stanford, 3-0

Oct. 18, 2002

STANFORD, Calif. -- The Washington volleyball team (12-6, 4-5) lost to defending national champion and No. 6 ranked Stanford (16-3, 7-2) this evening, 3-0 (30-26, 30-18, 30-23) in the Maples Pavilion.

The scoring tandem of Paige Benjamin (Redmond, Wash.) and Sanja Tomasevic (Uzice, Yugoslavia) again led the Husky attack with 17 and 10 kills, apiece but Washington could not slow the Cardinal offense that hit .389 on the night.

Stanford's Logan Tom did the majority of the damage with 16 kills, three aces and nine digs.

Gretchen Maurer (San Clemente, Calif.) anchored the Husky defense with seven digs, while dishing 37 assists. Tomasevic added six digs.

The Cardinal used 10 service aces and 10.5 blocks to keep Washington off balance and take the match victory.

The Huskies return to action next Friday and Saturday, October 25-26, when they host No. 1 USC and No. 13 UCLA in the Bank of America Arena. Game time is slated for 7 p.m.
