Swimming Opens Season With Double Dual Split

Oct. 19, 2002

LOS ANGELES, Calif., - The Oregon State women's swimming team opened the season with a dual meet split, defeating California-Santa Barbara 139-123 and falling to UCLA 144-115 Saturday afternoon at Sunset Canyon Recreation Center.

Senior Naya Higashijima won the 500-yard freestyle, 1,000 freestyle and 200 butterfly for the Beavers. Junior Birte Steven took first place in the 100 and 200 backstrokes, and Kristin Huston earned OSU's other individual event victory in the 100 freestyle.

'I'm happy with the win against UCSB, but we definitely have room to improve,' OSU head coach Mariusz Podkoscielny said. 'It's exciting because we improved on our performance from last year and we can see what we can do different. As long as we walk out of here with an idea of what to improve on, and to use this as a learning experience, then it was a good weekend.'

Oregon State started last season with a double dual at UCSB and against UCLA and dropped both duals.

Saturday's competition was the first collegiate meet for about half of the Oregon State team. Ten of the 21 Beaver swimmers are freshmen.

'They were off and on today,' Podkoscielny said about the freshmen. 'Everyone had at least one good swim, we were just lacking consistency.

'My expectations for races were a little higher, but as long as we keep getting better and hit it when it counts then I will be pleased.'

Oregon State had a good showing in the day's two relay events. The 200 medley relay team of Suzanne Starkey, Steven, Christina Kinney and Huston took second place as did the 400 freestyle team of Huston, Higashijima, Kristi Kuhlmey and Steven.

Podkoscielny said he was concerned with Higashijima's health due to an ankle sprain over a week ago, but the senior came through for the Beavers and raised her career individual event victory total to 82.

'Naya swam very well,' Podkoscielny said. 'She was doing what she always does best - racing and getting points where we needed them.'

OSU will have a three-week break from competition before its first home meet versus Nevada on Nov. 9.
