Oct. 19, 2002

Eric Peterson's UCLA men's cross country varsity team won the Cal Poly-SLO Invitational on Saturday (Oct. 19). The Bruins were paced by sophomore Ben Aragon who placed third overall on the 8000m course in a time of 26:22.3. The UCLA women's 'B' team also ran, placing fourth in the team standings, led by junior Tiffany Burgess, who placed fifth overall on the 5000m course in a time of 18:31.1 (the Bruin women's varsity on Saturday ran at the NCAA Preview meet in Terre Haute, IN).

Bruin Men

Aragon placed third overall (the second collegian) over the 8000m course in a time of 26:22.3. In all, the Bruin men had three runners in the Top 10 - Aragon, sophomore Erik Emilsson (5th, 26:41.1), freshman Martell Munguia (9th, 27:10.0) and two other runners in the Top 20 - sophomore Puneet Mahan (13th, 27:17.4) and senior Phil Young (20th, 27:43.2).

Bruin Women

Burgess paced the Bruin women over the 5000m course in a time of 18:31, placing fifth overall and the fourth highest collegian. After an outstanding 2002 track campaign, this was Burgess' first cross country race of the season, after recovering from numerous foot ailments. In track last spring, Burgess in the 800m qualified for the U. S. and NCAA Outdoors, placed second at the Pac-10 and was the second-fastest Bruin ever at 800 m (2:03.73).

In all UCLA had four runners in the Top 20 - Burgess, junior Jessica Marr (10th, 18:44.6), freshman Leslie Barrie (17th, 19:04.3) and freshman Laura Muller (18th, 19:06.6).

Looking Ahead

The Bruins on Saturday (Oct. 25) will run at the CS Fullerton Invitational. On Nov. 2, UCLA is the host school for the 2002 Pac-10 Cross Country Championships, run at Brookside Country Club in Pasadena.
