Wildcats Fall At Stanford

STANFORD, Calif. (AP) - Michael Sgroi kicked three field goals, and ChrisLewis threw 12 yards to Alex Smith for the game's only touchdown as Stanforddefeated Arizona 16-6 Saturday.
The Cardinal (2-4, 1-2 Pac-10) took the lead for good in the first quarterwhen Sgroi kicked a 45-yard field goal.
Jason Johnson passed for 244 yards to lead Arizona (3-4, 0-3), but he threwthree interceptions and was sacked six times.
After Sgroi's field goal, Arizona began moving up the field, until StanleyWilson intercepted one of Johnson's passes and ran 35 yards to the Wildcats17-yard line.
On the second play of possession, Lewis fired to ball to Smith, who pulledthe ball down from over his head and fell backward into the end zone for a 9-0lead.
Arizona's Bobby Wade was the single biggest threat to Stanford, catchingeight passes for 121 yards. He also returning two kickoffs for 58 yards andbrought a punt back 64 yards.
The Wildcats' only scores came on two field goals by Bobby Gill, from 25 and23 yards. Arizona didn't score in the second half.
Lewis was replaced by quarterback Kyle Matter, who led the Cardinal down thefield to the Arizona 7, but Matter's pass was picked off in the end zone byLance Briggs early in the fourth quarter.
Johnson drove the Wildcats to the Stanford 35, but his pass was interceptedat the 13 by Oshiomogho Atogwe. Matter then led Stanford to the Arizona 4 yardline, but again the Cardinal couldn't score a touchdown. They settled for a21-yarder by Sgroi.
Kerry Carter led Stanford's ground game with 98 yards on 27 carries. In thethird quarter, he carried for six consecutive plays to get into Wildcatterritory.
The drive led the Cardinal to the 8-yard line before the possession wentawry. Lewis recovered his own fumble for a loss of 2 yards. On the next play,he lofted the ball into the end zone, but it slipped through Teyo Johnson'shands.
Stanford had to settle for a 27-yard field goal from Sgroi to go ahead 13-6.
