Oregon State Edges Men's Soccer 3-2

Oct. 20, 2002

SEATTLE, Wash. - Led by Matt Johnson's game-winner in the 64th-minute, Oregon State edged Washington men's soccer 3-2 in a see-saw battle at Husky Soccer Field Sunday afternoon. OSU's victory was the first ever in the all-time series with the Huskies.

Prior to today's match, UW led the all-time series with OSU 24-0-2. Both draws took place in Corvallis in 1993 (1-1) and 1976 (1-1). With the loss, Washington dropped its third straight against Pac-10 opponents, falling to 3-6-3 overall and 0-3 in conference play. Oregon State picked up its first Pac-10 win, improving to 10-3 overall and 1-2 in the conference.

Johnson's goal, the only scored by either team in the second half of play, broke a 2-2 tie at the 64:17 minute mark. Johnson controlled his own blocked shot and blasted the ball past UW junior goalkeeper Daniel Waltman from five yards out for the game-winner.

The first half of the game featured both teams matching each other goal-for-goal. The Beavers got on the board first at the 5:26 mark. Joe Zaher launched a free kick into the upper left-hand corner of the net past a diving Waltman to give OSU a 1-0 lead.

The Huskies answered just over seven minutes later on senior Dayo Oyetuga's fourth goal of the season. He picked up a deflected shot by junior Seth Marsh and knocked it past Beaver goalkeeper Peter Billmeyer. The initial cross on the play came from sophomore C.J. Klaas from the right side.

OSU took the lead again on an unassisted goal by Alan Gordon at the 15:13 minute mark, only to have UW battle back to tie the score 2-2 on sophomore Brett Wiesner's fourth goal of the season at 26:37. Marsh sailed a free kick into the box, which first found the head of freshman defender Kevin Murray before Wiesner gained control and blasted the shot past Billmeyer.

Still searching for a win against Pac-10 opponents, Washington remains at home to host Fresno State, Friday, Oct. 25, at 7:15 p.m. and No. 6 UCLA, Sunday, Oct. 27, at 2:15 p.m. Both matches will be played at Husky Soccer Field.
