BEAR NOTES: The Cal volleyball team (13-5, 4-5) begins the second half of Pac-10 play as it hosts the Oregon schools Oct. 25-26 in Haas Pavilion after traveling to Saint Mary's for a non-league match Oct. 22 in Moraga. The Bears are continuing their push towards a national ranking and a postseason berth after upsetting then No. 17 ranked Washington State, 3-2, Oct. 18 at Haas. It was the second time this season Cal has upset a Top 25 team, defeating then No. 19 ranked Arizona, 3-0, Oct. 12 in Tucson. Against Oregon State, the Bears are looking to defeat the Beavers for the second time this season after breaking a four-match losing streak to OSU, 3-2, Sept. 28 in Corvallis. In the contest versus the Ducks, Cal will be looking to extend a seven-match winning streak after defeating Oregon, 3-2, Sept. 27 in Eugene. Of the Bears' nine Pac-10 matches this season, six have been five-game affairs. Cal captured three straight tournaments - the Golden Bear Invitational, the UNLV Gameworks Classic and the SMU DoubleTree Invitational - to begin the 2002 season. The Bears also won a school-record 27 straight games and tied a school-record (with the 1989 team, the last time Cal made NCAA postseason) by opening the year with nine straight match victories. The Bears have been led by three-time tournament MVP Mia Jerkov, who has led Cal in kills in every match this season. Since Sept. 16, the Bears have received votes in both the AVCA and Volleyball Magazine Top 25 polls.

JERKOV - ALL-AMERICA CANDIDATE: Mia Jerkov (pronounced YAIR-cove), a 6-3 sophomore outside hitter from Split, Croatia, was named the Oct. 21 AVCA/Sports Imports National Player of the Week after breaking the school record with 39 kills Oct. 17 versus Washington and then recording 38 kills Oct. 18 versus Washington State. For the two matches against the Washington schools, Jerkov tallied 77 kills and 42 digs, earning Pac-10 Player of the Week honors as well. It is the first time in school history a Bear volleyball player had earned national player of the week honors and it was also the first time a Cal player had consecutive matches with 30 or more kills. On the season, she has a team-leading 406 kills, 226 digs, 28 service aces, and a team-best 6.15 kills, 3.42 digs and 0.42 service aces per game. Jerkov also leads the Pac-10 in both total kills (406) and points (452.0, combining kills, service aces and blocks). She is in contention to be Cal's first All-America volleyball player since Sylvie Monnet earned the honor in 1983.

OTHER BEAR NOTABLES: Senior outside hitter Leah Young joined Jerkov as a member of the all-tournament teams for the Golden Bear, UNLV Gameworks and SMU DoubleTree Invitationals. Young, the Bears' lone senior, has a .278 hitting percentage, 14 service aces and 50 total blocks. Sophomore middle blocker Camille Leffall has been a member of the Gameworks Classic and the Golden Bear Invitational all-tournament teams, and is leading Cal with a .386 hitting percentage. Last season Leffall was named to the 2001 Pac-10 All-Freshman Team and established a school record with a .381 hitting percentage (163 kills, 44 errors, 312 attempts). Junior setter Caity Noonan returned this season after tearing the ACL in her left knee Sept. 7, 2001. Noonan has tallied 858 assists and was selected all-tournament at the SMU DoubleTree Invitational. She now has 1,693 career assists, fourth on the Cal all-time assist list.

HEAD COACH RICH FELLER: Rich Feller (49-53 at Cal, career 348-220, .613) is in his fourth season as Cal's head coach. Feller came to the Bears after a stint as assistant coach for the USA National Team and 14 years as head coach at Colorado State (1983-96) where he led the Rams to eight NCAA Tournament appearances and 12 Top 25 national rankings.

CAL VS. THE OPPONENTS: The Bears have an 8-1 all-time record against Saint Mary's (5-11, last defeated Portland, 3-1 Oct. 19), topping the Gaels 3-0 in the last meeting Oct. 2, 2001 in Berkeley. Saint Mary's is led by 5-11 sophomore outside hitter Lindsey Bogason (204 kills). Cal owns a 26-15 all-time record against Oregon State (6-12, 1-8, last weekend fell to Arizona, 3-0, and ASU, 3-1; have lost five matches in a row), defeating the Beavers in the last meeting, 3-2, Sept. 28 in Corvallis.
