Pac-10 Football Players Of The Week

WALNUT CREEK, Calif.--Quarterback Andrew Walter and kicker Mike Barth of Arizona State and linebacker Tom Canada of California have been named Pac-10 Players of the Week in football.
Walter and Barth played key roles in Arizona State's comeback 45-42 upset win at No. 6-ranked Oregon. Walter, a sophomore from Grand Junction, Colo., setablished a Pac-10 single-game record by passing for 536 yards to lead the Sun Devil offense. Walter completed 31 of 53 (.585) passes for the 536 yards and four touchdowns of 22, 3, 67 and 58 yards. He directed an ASU offense that piled up 559 yards passing and 590 yards total offense.
Barth, a senior from Phoenix, Ariz., was perfect on three field goal attempts, connecting from 32, 44 and 29 yards. His 29-yard field goal was the game winner which came with 1:58 remaining.
Canada, a senior from Visalia, Calif., made the big plays for the California defense in the Golden Bears' 17-12 upset win against UCLA. Canada had two quarterback sacks for minus-27 yards and forced two Bruin fumbles. One fumble led to a Cal touchdown and the other came late in the game and allowed the Bears to run out the clock to end the contest. The California defense limited UCLA to 29 yards rushing, 226 yards total offense, just 4-of-16 third-down conversions and posted seven quarterback sacks. In addition, the Golden Bear defense made two fourth-quarter stands in their own territory following blocked punts to preserve the win.
Others nominated for offensive player of the week honors were receiver Mike Williams of USC and tight end Alex Smith of Stanford. Also nominated on defense were end Kenechi Udeze of USC and linebackers Jon Alston of Stanford, Lance Briggs of Arizona and Spencer Havner of UCLA. Kickers Ryan Killeen of USC and Michael Sgroi of Stanford and return man Bobby Wade of Arizona were nominated for special teams play.
