WSU Tennis Heads To ITA Regionals

THIS WEEK: The Washington State women's tennis team heads to the ITA Regional at Stanford, Calif...Four day tournament starts Friday, Oct. 25... Singles finalists and doubles champions will advance to the 2002 ITA National Indoor Championships held Nov. 7-10 in Dallas, Texas.
OTHER TEAMS IN THE FIELD: The Cougars will compete against ITA Northwest region opponents Fresno State, Gonzaga, Idaho, Nevada, Pacific, Portland, Sacramento State, Saint Mary's, San Francisco and Santa Clara, as well as Pac-10 foes California, Oregon, Washington and Stanford.
NEXT WEEK: WSU will travel to the Texas A&M Invitational at College Station, Texas, Nov. 1-3.
COUGARS IN THE RANKINGS: The WSU doubles tandem of Lorena Arias and Chris Martinez is ranked No. 46 in the ITA preseason poll. The Cougars finished last season at No. 29 in the ITA team rankings. WSU finished last season ranked as the No. 5 team in the Northwest region. Lorena Arias finished at No. 23 in the regional singles rankings with Orsolya Sallai following at No. 24. Arias teamed with Chris Martinez to earn the No. 7 doubles ranking in the Northwest region.
COUGS REWRITING THE RECORD BOOKS: Several Cougars made their mark on the WSU Top 10 list in 2002. Lorena Arias and Chris Martinez won 19 doubles matches, tying them at eighth on the career list and third on the single season list. Zorana Roganovic and Orsolya Sallai won nine of their 12 doubles matches; their .750 winning percentage ranks eighth on the single season list and fifth on the career list.
COUGS NCAA BOUND IN 2002: The Washington State women's tennis team enjoyed a stellar season in 2002, advancing to the NCAA Championships for the fourth time in the last five years. The Cougars finished No. 29 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings, the highest final in WSU history.
