Cardinal Golf Set To Host Nelson Invitational

Stanford Hosts Fall Tournament: The Stanford men's golf team head home to host The Nelson Invitational, October 25-27 at the Stanford Golf Course in Stanford, Calif. The three-day tournament will consist of 18-holes each day with teams teeing off beginning at 8 a.m. on Friday and Saturday from the first and 10th tees. Sunday will be a shotgun start (8 a.m.).
Tournament Participants: The three-round tournament features 18 teams and consists of host-Stanford, Colorado, Colorado State, Duke, Florida Southern, Georgia Tech, Hawaii-Hilo, Idaho, Kansas, Miami-Ohio, Missouri, Northwestern, Notre Dame, North Carolina State, Oregon State, Texas Tech, Toledo and Washington.
Last Year: The University of Washington won the event last year, turning in a 13-under par 839 for the tournament. North Carolina State's Justin Walter carded a seven-under par 206 (70-68-68) to win top medalist honors. As a team, Stanford tied for second with an 844. Jim Seki led the Cardinal with a tie for fourth overall (209). Kevin Blue shot a 211 to tied for 12th individually while teammate Blake Mastalir tied for 21st with a 214. George Downing and Pat Phillips tied for 59th (225). Ron Won tied for 63rd (226) and Del de Windt tied for 67th (228). Brian Sinay placed 81st with a 248.

Last Time Out: The Stanford men's golf team shot a final round of 310 to finish tied for 16th with a 901 at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational at the Meadows Club in Fairfax, Calif. Cardinal Ron Won tied for 12th individually to lead Stanford, shooting a three-round total of one-under par 212 (67-69-76). Freshman Kyle Gentry finished 73rd carding a 228 (75-77-76) for the invite while teammate Del de Windt placed 80th with a 232 (78-78-76). Freshman Scott MacDonald was 86th with a 240 (79-79-82).
Head Coach Jeff Mitchell: A former professional golfer on the PGA Tour and director of golf at Texas Tech, Jeff Mitchell begins his third year as the head men's golf coach at Stanford. Prior to coming to The Farm, Mitchell spent 10 years as the head women's golf coach at Texas Tech, an in 1998, he became the golf director for both the men's and women's programs. He was named District Coach of the Year in 1993 and 1996 and the Southwest Conference Coach of the Year in 1994 and 1996. For nine years (1976-84), Mitchell was on the PGA Tour, playing in an average of 30 tournaments a year.
