Men's Cross Country Ranked No. 5 Nationally for Fifth Straight Week

EUGENE, Ore. - EUGENE, Ore. - For the fourth straight week, the University of Oregon men's cross country team was tabbed fifth nationally in the Mondo Men's Cross Country Poll.

The Ducks were also tabbed fifth in weekly editions released on October 1st, 8th and 15th, after winning the Roy Griak Invitational in St. Paul, Minn., Sept. 28. In prior weeks, they opened the year tied for ninth in the preseason poll, dropped to 10th in the first regular season poll (9/17), then climbed to ninth the following week (9/24).

Oregon is one of two Pac-10 schools in the top five with No. 1 Stanford. Other teams from the Pac-10 or Western Regional receiving votes include No. 25 Arizona State and No. 34 Cal Poly SLO.

A month ago in their season opener in Minnesota, the Duck men defeated four teams that are currently top-10 ranked this season (No. 7 Eastern Michigan, No. 8 Central Michigan, No. 9 Weber State and No. 10 BYU) and seven more teams in the top-25 or receiving votes (No. 15 Minnesota, No. 17 Providence, No. 20 Ohio State, No. 23 Michigan State, No. 25. Arizona State, No. 29 Iowa, No. 36 Texas).

Individually in that stop, sophomore Ryan Andrus (eighth, 24:42) led a tight 14-second scoring pack, followed by junior Brett Holts (16th, 24:48), All-America senior Jason Hartmann (19th, 24:50), redshirt junior John Lucas (21st, 24:50), and redshirt sophomore Eric Logsdon (32nd, 24:56). Other Duck finishers included junior Noel Paulson (88th, 25:30.4) and redshirt frosh Will Viviani (128th, 25:55).

On the women's side this weekend, the Ducks compete in the OSU Beaver Classic in Corvallis, Ore., Sat., Oct. 26 at Avery Park. The women's 4K race starts at 10 a.m., and Duck entries include freshmen Nicole Feest, Eleanor Gordon, Chelsea Manesh, Krissy Sonniksen and Sabrina Turner, redshirt freshman Haripurkh Khalsa, sophomore Beth Jackson, and redshirt sophomore Taylor Bryant.Meet results will be available at the www.orst.edu/groups/running web site.

Last weekend, the Duck women competed in the Pre-National Invitational at the LaVern Gibson Cross Country Course in Terre Haute, Ind., and took 18th in the white race with 503 points. The 37-team field featured 15 top-40 teams, as Oregon edged then-No. 31 Florida State (19th, 505) and then-No. 37 Idaho (24th, 552). Individually, redshirt senior Carrie Zografos led the Ducks for the second time this season (53rd, 21:35), just ahead of junior Laura Harmon (63rd, 21:41). Juniors Eri Macdonald (112th, 22:09) and Magdalena Sandoval (122nd, 22:14) and senior Erinn Gulbrandsen (153rd, 22:30) rounded out the scoring, and other Duck entrants included redshirt junior Alicia Snyder-Carlson (191st, 23:02) and Feest (19th, 23:07).

Next week, both Duck units travel to the Pacific-10 Conference Championships, Sat., Nov. 2 at Brookside Golf Course in Pasadena, Calif. Last year the Duck men and women finished third and eighth, respectively, with Hartmann (sixth) and Zografos (35th) UO's top finishers in the ASU-hosted meet.
