Women's Golfers Climb to No. 6 in National Rankings
Oct. 23, 2002
Seattle - The Washington women's golf team moved up six spots to sixth place in this week's GolfWeek Sagarin Performance Index. It is the highest ranking in the history of the program. In three fall tournaments, the Huskies have finished second twice and third once.
The Huskies have a power rating of 73.50. Oklahoma State tops the poll with a rating of 72.06. Washington sophomore Paige Mackenzie is ranked 26th among individual players with a rating of 72.48. Louise Friberg is ranked 31st at 72.60 and Lindsay Morgan is 59th at 73.47. Pepperdine's Katherine Hull tops all collegiate players with a rating of 70.01.
'This is a very exciting moment for our program,' said Husky coach Mary Lou Mulflur, now in her 20th season at Washington. 'We have played well to this point this season, but we are definitely capable of playing better. This poll is based on your performance, not just a subjective ranking by a committee. Our team is proud to have reached this mark. Now the challenge is staying there.'
The Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index is based on a mathematical formula that uses a player's won-lost-tied record against other players when they play on the same course on the same day, and the stroke differential between those players, then links all players to one another based on common opponents. The ratings give an indication of who is playing well over the past 52 weeks.
The poll's power rating for individual players is not a stroke average. The rating is calculated using a player's record, stroke differential and connection to all the other players in the database. However, It does represent the typical score you can expect a player to shoot; the difference between two ratings predicts the difference between two players in a typical round.
