Two Men's Tennis Players Advance to Third Round of Omni Hotels Region VIII-South Championships

MALIBU, Calif. - Two Arizona men's tennis players, junior Carl Hagman and sophomore Colin O'Grady, advanced to the third round of the singles main-draw at the Omni Hotels Region VIII-South Championships in Malibu, Calif. The team earned seven singles and two doubles victories Thursday.
First round singles finished with three wins and three losses. Hagman defeated Peter Surapol of UC Irvine in two sets, 6-3, 6-1. No. 4-seeded Kim earned a victory over Leo Graeubig of Loyola Marymount in three sets, 7-5, 3-6, 6-1. O'Grady also earned a victory over Norman Tam of UC Riverdale, 6-1, 6-4. Andrus suffered his second loss of the fall season to Travis Kinard of UCLA, 7-6 (6), 6-2. Mullane fell to No. 6-seeted Erfan Djahanjiri also of UCLA in straight sets, 7-6, 6-2. Gessner lost to Jon Endrikat of UC Irvine, 6-2, 6-0.
In second round main draw singles, Hagman defeated UCI's Surapol, 6-3, 6-1. O'Grady earned his second victory of the day by downing UCR's Tam in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. Kim lost his first set to Mirco Schwindt of UC Santa Barbara and retired from the second set at 2-0.
The consolation rounds of singles included three Wildcats: Andrus, Mullane and Gessner. Andrus defeated Ryan Eveloff of Arizona State, 6-1, 6-1. Mullane won by defeating Arah Bormand of UC Irvine, 6-4, 7-6 (3), and Gessner fell to Jon Scott of Arizona State, 3-6, 7-5 (10-7).
In doubles play, Hagman and O'Grady paired up once again to defeat Clinton Lechter and Pim Van Mele of Arizona State, 9-8. The tandem of Andrus and Kim earned their first victory as a pair over Jordan Leo and Devin Rippner of UC Riverdale, 8-2. Gessner and Mullane teamed to form the third duo and lost to the No. 2-seeded Jon Endrikat and Brian Morton UC Irvine, although the score is not available.
The Wildcats will hit the courts again Friday at the Omni Hotels Region VIII-South Championships in Malibu, Calif. Play begins at 8:30 a.m. with the second round of consolation play and wraps up with the quarterfinal rounds of doubles, which begin at 3:30 p.m.
