Wildcats Turn In Strong Showing

MALIBU, Calif. - Arizona junior Carl Hagman andsophomore Colin O'Grady advance to the third round of the single's main draw at theOmni Hotels Region VIII-South Championships in Malibu, Calif. The teamearned seven singles and two doubles victories Thursday.

Head coach Bill Wright traveled six men to Malibu, Calif., includingfreshman Daniel Andrus, sophomore Chris Gessner, Hagman, junior Whi Kim,freshman Tim Mullane and O'Grady.

First round singles finished with three wins and three losses. Hagmandefeated Peter Surapol of UC Irvine in two sets, 6-3, 6-1. No. 4-seeted Kim earneda victory over Leo Graeubig of Loyola Marymount in three sets, 7-5, 3-6,6-1. O'Grady also earned a victory over Norman Tam of UC Riverside, 6-1,6-4. Andrus suffered his second loss of the fall season to Travis Kinardof UCLA, 7-6 (6), 6-2. Mullane fell to No. 6-seeted Erfan Djahanjiri alsoof UCLA in straight sets, 7-6, 6-2. Gessner lost to Jon Endrikat of UCIrvine, 6-2, 6-0.

In second round main draw singles, Hagman beat UCI's Surapol, 6-3, 6-1.O'Grady earned his second victory of the day by defeating UCR's Tam instraight sets, 6-3, 6-4. Kim lost his first set to Mirco Schwindt of UC Santa Barbaraand retired from the second set at 2-0.

The consolation rounds of singles included three Wildcats Andrus, Mullaneand Gessner. Andrus beat Ryan Eveloff of Arizona State, 6-1, 6-1. Mullanewon by defeating Arah Bormand of UC Irvine, 6-4, 7-6 (3). Gessner lost toJon Scott of Arizona State, 3-6, 7-5 (10-7).

In doubles play Hagman and O'Grady paired up once again to defeat ClintonLechter and Pim Van Mele of Arizona State, 9-8. The tandem of Andrus andKim earned their first victory as a pair over Jordan Leo and Devin Rippnerof UC Riverside, 8-2. Gessner and Mullane teamed to form the third team andlost to the No. 2-seeted Jon Endrikat and Brian Morton UC Irvine, althoughthe score is not available.

The Wildcats will hit the courts again Friday at the Omni Hotels RegionVIII-South Championships in Malibu, Calif. Play starts at 8:30 a.m. withthe second round of consolation play and raps up with the quarterfinalrounds of doubles which starts at 3:30 p.m.
