Oct. 24, 2002
Stanford, Calif. - The Oregon women's tennis team will participate in the Omni Hotels ITA Regional Championships Friday through Monday in Stanford, Calif. The 128-person singles draw and 64-team doubles draw will be the first action for almost all of the Ducks this season.
Daria Panova, the preseason No. 44-ranked player in the country, will be the only Oregon player seeded in singles play as the No. 9 seed. Panova is also the only one to have played prior to this weekend, playing in the Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships. The other seven Ducks competing will all make their season debuts, with three making their collegiate debuts.
Proven veteran Courtney Nagle will team with newcomer Julie Merle in doubles play, and the tandem has received the No. 6 seed in the tournament. Panova and Davina Mendiburu will also be in the doubles tournament and have drawn the No. 9 seed. The other Duck duos are captain Monika Gieczys and freshman Anna Leksinska along with the team of Ester Bak and newcomer Jaime Marshall.
All eight players will take part in the singles draw as well. The tournament will be played at Stanford's Taube Family Tennis Stadium, with the finals for doubles and singles being played Monday.
