Beavers Haunted By Close Calls, Fall To ASU 1-0
Oct. 25, 2002
CORVALLIS, Ore. - -
Despite outshooting Arizona State 17-10, the Oregon State women's soccer team fell to the Sun Devils 1-0 on Friday afternoon at Lorenz Field on an Elizabeth Bogus tap-in in the 20th minute.
The score was set up when ASU's (9-3-2 overall, 2-2-0 Pacific-10) Haley Stein sent a cross pass to the near post, where it was flicked on just past OSU keeper Jo Fletcher by Manya Makoski and tapped in for the game-winner by Bogus.
OSU's Courtney Carter had two shots rebound off the crossbar in the game, one in the first half and another with 2 minutes, 5 seconds left in the game. Katie Henderson sent another shot just over the bar in the first half, and Lindsey Beem put three of her team-leading five shots on goal.
For the game, ASU's Kelly Fitzgerald made seven saves.
'I think if you don't score, it doesn't do you any favors, but it wasn't as if we stopped playing,' OSU coach Steve Fennah said. 'We continued to pound it from the first minute to the last minute.
'I don't know what more you can ask of our players right now. We're on top on a large level in most of the games we're playing. We're taking it to our opponents and we're playing good soccer. We rattled the crossbar and post several times today - it's just being a little cruel on us right now.'
Since beginning Pac-10 play this year, OSU has been held to two goals in five games, while seeing its overall record drop to 7-7-2 overall and 0-5-0 in Pacific-10 Conference play. Two of those losses have been by one goal.
'With a little bit of luck, we could have half a dozen goals, but it's not happening,' Fennah said. 'The kids are down, in one sense, but in another, they know they're doing well. I guess we've got to get a four-leaf clover out here.'
With four games remaining in the regular season, OSU finds itself in a predicament similar to the one it faced last year, when it rebounded from six straight losses to win three in a row and nearly qualify for the NCAA Tournament.
'It is a similar situation to what we found ourselves in last year, where we played a bunch of games and could have had results we wanted and didn't,' Fennah said. 'Then we turned around and won three games in a row, which is what we've got to set ourselves up to do this year.
'We've been here before and done it before, but it's just a little tough - they're playing well and not getting the reward.'
OSU hosts Arizona at noon on Sunday.
