Cal Day One Results From SMU Classic, Pacific Invitational

Junior Natalie Coughlin led the University of California women's swimming with two wins at the SMU Swimming & Diving Classic in the first day of action, Friday at Perkins Natatorium in Dallas, Texas.
Coughlin won the 100-yard butterfly (52.99) and set a meet record in her 100 backstroke (54.53) victory. Senior Staciana Stitts won the 100 breaststroke (1:02.49) and the Golden Bears' team of freshman Helen Silver, Stitts, Coughlin and junior Danielle Becks won the 400 medley relay (3:43.35).
Cal is in second place with 158.50 points, trailing host SMU (170 points).
At the Pacific Invitational in Stockton, Calif. the Bears' split squad stands in first place after the first day of competition. With 346 points, Cal holds a 159 points lead over second-place Washington State.
The action at both the SMU Classic and Pacific Invitational continues Saturday, with events in Stockton beginning at 9 a.m. PT, while the SMU Classic resumes at 7:30 p.m. MST.
