No. 7 Cal Upset By No. 25 Washington, 2-1
Oct. 25, 2002
SEATTLE No. 7 California couldn't hold on to a 1-0 lead in a 2-1 loss to No. 25 Washington Friday evening at Husky Soccer Field. With the defeat, the Golden Bears fell to 9-5-1 (2-3 Pac-10), while the Huskies improved to 8-4-3 (3-0-1 Pac-10).
Cal continued to struggle on the road. The Bears are 7-1 at home but only 2-4-1 away from Edwards Stadium. Shots are hard for Cal to come by on the road, as Washington held an 11-6 advantage in that department tonight. In two home wins last weekend, the Bears averaged 22 shots per game.
Freshman forward Dania Cabello lifted Cal to a 1-0 lead with a goal in the fourth minute. Senior forward Laura Schott fed the ball to Cabello, who delivered a 15-yard shot into the lower left corner of the net. The goal was Cabello's fourth of the year and moved her into sole possession for second place on the team for points with 13.
Schott now has seven points on the season from two goals and three assists, moving the All-American only 16 points shy of tying Joy (Biefeld) Fawcett's school career record of 133 points.
Washington's Nicole Martinez tied the game at 1-1 by scoring off a Melissa Bennett corner kick in the 24th minute.
In the 75th minute, Jaime Carstensen tallied the eventual game-winning goal on another Bennett corner kick. Bennett improved her Pac-10 leading assist total to 16 with her two assists against Cal.
The Bears look for the weekend split Sunday at Washington State. Game time is a noon. The Cougars lost to top-ranked Stanford, 1-0, today.
