Women's Tennis Fares Well In First Day Of ITA Regional Championships

PALO ALTO, Calif.- Washington women's tennis fared well in the first day of the 2002 Omni Hotels ITA Northwest Regional Championships hosted by Stanford University in Palo Alto, Calif., Friday. All but two singles players and one doubles team advanced to the second day of competition tomorrow.
Advancing past the first two rounds of singles action for Washington were No. 8 seed senior Darija Klaic, freshman Dinka Hadzic, senior Erin Boisclair, senior Colleen Gray, sophomore Dea Sumantri, and junior Erin Hoe. Junior Claire Carter, the No. 11 seed, was upset in the round of 64 by Oregon's Courtney Nagle in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1.
Three of the four Husky doubles teams advanced past the first two rounds including the ninth-seeded team of Gray and Sumantri, as well as Coulter and Hadzic, and the third-seeded team of Carter and Klaic.
Freshman Stephanie Svanfeldt earned a win in her collegiate debut for Washington, defeating Cal's Jessica Shu, 2-6, 6-4 ,6-4 in the first round. Svanfeldt later fell in the second round to Kristen Grady from Cal Poly in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4. The only Husky doubles team not to advance was the pair of Boisclair and Hoe, who fell to a team from Cal, 8-3.
The ITA Women's Northwest Regional Championships continue Saturday through Monday. The singles finalists and doubles champions from the ITA Northwest Regional Championships will advance to the 2002 National Indoor Championships, Nov. 7-10, at Brookhaven Country Club in Farmers Branch, Texas.
