Beavers Nearly Upset No. 6 Stanford, But Lose In Five Games
Oct. 26, 2002
STANFORD, Calif. - Oregon State's volleyball team took No. 6 Stanford to five games for just the third time this season, but the defending national champions prevailed 24-30, 30-20, 30-16, 31-33, 15-5 on Saturday.
While the Beavers (7-13, 2-9 Pac-10) are still searching for their first-ever win over the Cardinal (19-3, 9-2), OSU did see one first in the loss. Prior to Saturday, OSU had never played a five-game match against the Cardinal at Stanford. In fact, it was the first time since 1993 that the Beavers won a game in a road match with the Cardinal.
OSU is just the third team to go the distance with Stanford this season.
'We played tough. Our team hung in there. We could have been proud we took a game off them and given up after losing games two and three, but we said, 'No, let's win game four and then have an opportunity to win this match',' coach Nancy Somera said. 'I would have liked game five to be a little closer, but Stanford clearly was the better team in that game.'
Megan McMillan led the Beavers with 19 kills, one shy of her career-high. Joscelyn Hannaford, who played sparingly against Cal on Friday in her first match back after knee surgery, came off the bench and hit .458 with 13 kills against Stanford. Allison Lawrence (12) and Michele Solomon (11) also added double figures.
'Laura did a great job finding kills for our hitters. She had a great offensive night,' Somera said. 'I'm just really proud of the competitive maturity the team showed. They're playing tougher and making things happen.'
Defensively, Nikki Neuburger led OSU with 18 digs, while Lawrence chipped in a career-high 16 digs to post her fourth double-double of the year.
Stanford was led by Logan Tom, who had a match-high 25 kills and 18 digs. The Beavers finished the night with 74 kills, just two fewer than Stanford, but the Cardinal hit .364 to OSU's .176. Stanford also outdug the Beavers, 76-62, and dominated at the net with 25.5 blocks to OSU's two.
