Cardinal Men Take Top Honors At Pacific Invitational

Stockton, Calif. - The Stanford men's swimming team kicked off the 2002-03 season with a victory at the Pacific Invitational this Saturday in Stockton, Calif. The Cardinal tallied 1,085.5 points to win the invite over second-place finisher BYU who tallied 605 points. Pacific was third while California placed fourth.
Senior Randall Bal finished first in the Division I individual points standings with 70 while teammate Michael Bruce was second with 66. Stanford captured the top five spots in the Div. I individual point standings as Bobby O'Bryan was third, followed by Dan Trupin and Markus Rogan.
The Cardinal won the 200y medley relay over Pacific, turning in a time of 1:33.07 to start the day. Stanford finished 1-2 in the 400y IM as Markus Rogan claimed first (3:53.99) while teammate Dan Trupin (4:02.27) took second.
Cardinal Dan Westcott placed second in the 100y fly with a time of 50.04 while Jayme Cramer finished third at 50.35. John Waters claimed first in the 200y free with a time of 1:40.19 to lead the Cardinal. In the 100y breast, Michael Bruce finished second (56.80) followed by teammate Dan Trupin (58.64) in third.
The Cardinal then won the 800y free relay in a time of 6:42.27 and followed that with a 1-2-3 finish in the 200y fly. Stanford's Jayme Cramer took first in a time of 1:51.03 followed by Matt McDonald (1:52.75) and Michael Bruce (1:52.93). Bal won his second event on the day turning in a time of 45.55 in the 100y free.
Bruce won his first event of the day in the 200y breast with a time of 2:01.99. Teammate Thomas Brown finished third in 2:08.38. Matt Sorlien claimed the top time in the 200y back with his 1:47.92 followed by Randall Bal (1:51.49) and Tobias Oriwal (1:51.67) to round out the top three.
In the final event of the day, the Stanford 400y free relay won the event over BYU in a time of 3:03.27.
