No. 15 Cal Upsets No. 7 Stanford, 1-0
Oct. 26, 2002
The 15th-ranked California men's soccer team upset the seventh-ranked Stanford Cardinal Saturday afternoon at Edwards Stadium. Sophomore Troy Roberts led the Golden Bears to the victory, scoring the lone goal of the game in the 42nd minute. The Bears improve their overall record to 11-3-1 (4-1 Pac-10) as the Cardinal falls to 11-3-1 (2-2-1 Pac-10).
'The players looked at this game like any other game,' said Cal head coach Kevin Grimes. 'We didn't try to treat it as anything extra special. The fact that they came out and played such a good possession first half. It didn't surprise me and it certainly didn't surprise the players.'
'Noah played a great ball,' said Roberts. 'The win feels good. It's definitely a confidence booster. We went into this game thinking we could win it. We performed, executed and put the pressure on. It definitely felt good.'
The Cardinal came close to tying the game in the 58th minute off a shot by James Twellman, but Stanford was called for offsides, keeping the game at 1-0 Cal.
Senior goalkeeper Josh Saunders played superbly at his position, coming up with four saves in the win. Cardinal goalkeeper Andrew Terris collected five saves in the effort.
This was the first time since 1996 that Cal defeated Stanford.
California returns to action Friday, Nov. 1, facing Stanford for the last of two scheduled meetings. Game time is 7:30 p.m at Maloney Field at Stanford.
