Panova Advances to Quarters for Women's Tennis
Oct. 26, 2002
STANFORD, Calif. - Daria Panova, the No. 9 seed and No. 44-ranked player in the nation, advanced to the quarterfinals of the Omni Hotels ITA Regional Championships with two more wins in singles play. Panova is the lone Duck remaining in the singles draw, with teammate Courtney Nagle coming close to joining her in the quarters.
Panova defeated Barbora Kudilkova of Idaho in straight sets to set up a match with Fresno State's Chloe Carlotti, the No. 4 seed in the tournament and the No. 24-ranked player in the nation. Panova won a tight first set before running away in the second, 7-5, 6-2.
'Daria played a complete match,' Oregon head coach Nils Schyllander said. 'From the first point to the last point of the match, she made smart decisions and good shots.'
Nagle, who breezed through the first three rounds of the tournament without losing a set, lost in the fourth round to Stanford's Erin Burdette, the No. 1 seed in the tournament and No. 7 player in the nation, 6-4, 6-3. Freshman Julie Merle and Davina Mendiburu also lost third round matches in singles play for the Ducks.
'Our team, in general, played very solid,' Schyllander said. 'I'm very pleased with the way they executed.'
The Ducks were not as successful in doubles play on the day, with both Oregon teams losing. No. 6-seeded Nagle and Merle led Cal's Arquelles/Havlicek 6-3 in the tiebreaker, but the Cal team rattled off five straight points to take the match, 9-8(6). No. 9-seeded Mendiburu and Panova lost to Cal's Fusano/Kops-Jones, the tourney's No. 2 seed and No. 6-ranked team in the country, 8-4.
In consolation play, Anna Leksinska, who received a bye in each of the first two rounds, advanced to the fourth round of singles action. She defeated Reese Galido of Cal Poly, 6-1, 6-1, to continue her run in the consolation draw. Joining Leksinska in the fourth round is team captain Monika Gieczys, who drew a first round bye before knocking off Armauda Sanches of Sacramento State, 6-0, 7-5, and then advancing when an opponent was forced to withdraw.
Gieczys and Leksinska's consolation singles matches will begin at 9 a.m. Sunday, with Panova's match beginning at 10:30 a.m.
