Oct. 25, 2002

SEATTLE, Wash. - The No. 1-ranked USC women's volleyball team survived close games to defeat Washington, 3-1 (30-27, 30-17, 25-30, 32-30), Friday night at Bank of America Arena. With a Husky win in game three, the match marked only the fourth time this season that the Women of Troy failed to sweep their opponent.

USC improves to 17-0 and 10-0 in the Pac-10 with the win, while the Huskies fall to 12-7 overall and 4-6 in conference play.

Despite hitting .220 compared to the Huskies' .317 in game one, the Trojans took advantage of six Washington service errors for points. USC took its first lead of the game at 17-16 on a kill by Emily Adams and never looked back, pushing its lead to 28-23. Following back-to-back UW kills and an error, a kill by Lauren Killian gave the Women of Troy game one.

USC cruised to the 30-17 victory in game two, quickly grabbing the 10-point lead at 17-7 and again at 22-12 behind a .333 attack percentage. The Huskies hit -.025 in the game as their 10 kills were overshadowed by 11 attack errors.

The Huskies battled their way back in game three behind the six-kill performance of senior Paige Benjamin. Washington kills, combined with three USC errors broke a 12-12 tie and gave UW a 17-12 advantage. The Huskies extended their lead to eight (29-21) to reach match point, but the Trojans were not going down without a fight and reeled off the next four points. A USC error finally lifted the Huskies to the 30-25 win.

The Women of Troy gained momentum early in game four, jumping out to a 16-10 lead. USC eventually reached match point at 29-24 with four straight kills, but the Huskies fought off defeat five times to tie the score at 29-29 and again at 30-30. Back-to-back kills by Adams and Keao Burdine, however, gave USC the match victory.

The Trojans had four players finish with double-digit kills and four with double digit digs. Burdine and April Ross each posted double-doubles with 12 digs and 11 and 12 kills, respectively. Libero Nicole Davis led with 21 digs in the outing and Killian and Adams each contributed seven blocks.

The Women of Troy will travel to Washington State on Saturday, Oct. 26, for a 7 p.m. match in Pullman.
