Men's Tennis Competes At Omni Hotels Region VIII-South Championship

Oct. 27, 2002

MALIBU, Calif. - Featuring the top players in on the West Coast, the Omni Hotels Region VIII South Championship wrapped up on Sunday, Oct. 27, at Pepperdine's Ralph-Straus Center. The Trojans had five players competing in the four-day event, as junior Daniel Langre, sophomore transfer Johan Berg and redshirt freshman Jeff Kazarian advanced the furthest in singles. Berg and Langre also advanced to the quarterfinals in doubles.

The seventh-seeded Langre defeated Jaako Asujo of Loyola Marymount with ease in round one, 6-3, 6-2, then captured another two-set win over Arizona State's Oliver Charroin, 6-3, 6-4, in the second round. Langre was eliminated in the third round, 6-2, 7-5, by Diego Acuna of Pepperdine, a 9-16 seed.

Berg entered the tournament as a 9-16 seed and posted a 6-3, 6-2 win over Ryan Eveloff of Arizona State in the opening round and a 7-6 (6), 6-2 decision over UCLA's Travis Kinard in round two. Berg fell to eventual runner-up Chris Lam of UCLA, 7-5, 6-2, in the third round. Lam advanced to the final where he fell to fellow Bruin teammate Erfan Djahangiri for the title.

Marking his best tournament performance at USC, Kazarian had no problems defeating Dontia Haynes of UCI in the opener, 6-3, 6-2. The second round pitted Kazarian against USC teammate Scott Patterson. Kazarian was forced to come back after dropping the first set and defeated Patterson 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 to advance. In another three-set battle, he was eliminated by Arizona's Colin O'Grady, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4, in the third round.

In doubles play, Langre and Berg outlasted UCLA's Chris Surapol and Aaron Yovan with the tiebreaker, 9-8, to advance. The second round was not as much of a challenge as the duo defeated Arizona's Carl Hagman and Colin O'Grady, 8-2. Once again, the third (quarterfinal) round proved the toughest for the Trojans who lost a close match 9-8 (4) to Pepperdine's Diego Acuna and Calle Hansen. Acuna and Hansen advanced to the doubles final, but fell to the Arizona State tandem of Olivier Charroin and Chris Stewart, for the title.

Following are USC's complete tournament results.
