Oct. 27, 2002
MORAGA, Calif. - Oregon's doubles play highlighted a solid day at the Omni Hotels ITA Regional Championships for the men's tennis team. All three doubles teams for the Ducks won their matches to advance to the round of 16, while No. 7-seeded Manuel Kost played his way into the quarterfinals of the singles draw.
'Our doubles is looking deeper than we've ever had it,' Oregon head coach Chris Russell said. 'That's been a real bright spot.'
The No. 10-seeded team of Sven Swinnen and Oded Teig defeated San Francisco's Elvik/Lippert, 8-3 in their first match of the tournament. Thomas Bieri and Kost also won their fist doubles match of the tournament over No. 9-seeded Chen/Bruggemann of Santa Clara, 8-4. Chris King and Arron Spencer rounded out the Ducks' doubles success wth an 8-6 victory over Lachens/Lopez of St. Mary's.
In singles play, No. 63-ranked Kost has yet to lose a set, and will now face No. 2-seeded Alex Vlaski of Washington. Vlaski, the No. 15-ranked player in the nation, is no stranger to Kost. The two Pac-10 foes matched up twice last season, with Kost winning both matches.
'Manu's been quite solid,' Russell said. 'He's going to have to play well to beat [Vlaski].'
Teig, one of eight No. 9 seeds in the tournament, knocked off Fresno State's Mare Schaerer in straight sets in the third round before falling to No. 1-seeded David Martin of Stanford, 6-2, 6-4. Swinnen, one of eight No. 17 seeds in the tourney, lost in the third round to No. 9-seeded Hector Almada of Fresno State, 7-6(5), 6-2.
In consolation play, Jason Menke, Bieri and King all won two matches to advance to the fourth round in singles play.
