Carter and Klaic Fall In Doubles Final At ITA Regionals

PALO ALTO, Calif.- The Washington women's tennis duo of junior Claire Carter and senior Darija Klaic advanced as far as the doubles final at the 2002 ITA Women's Northwest Regional Championships hosted by Stanford, Monday, only to fall to the top-seeded team from Stanford, 8-5.
Carter and Klaic, the No. 3 seed, pulled an 8-6 upset over Christina Fusano and Raquel Kops-Jones from Cal, the No. 2 seed, in the doubles semifinals earlier this morning to advance to the championship match.
The doubles final pitted the Husky duo against the top-seeded team from Stanford, Lauren Barnikow and Erin Burdette. Carter and Klaic fell just shy of an automatic berth to the National Indoor Championships, losing to the Cardinal pair 8-5.
In the singles final, Kops-Jones defeated Stanford's Alice Barnes in three sets, 7-6 (4), 3-6, 6-1.
The singles finalists and doubles champion advanced to the 2002 National Indoor Championships, Nov. 7-10, at Brookhaven Country Club in Farmers Branch, Texas.
