Stanford Advances Two Doubles Teams To Omni Regional Semifinals

MORAGA, Calif. - The Stanford men's tennis team advanced a pair of doubles teams to the semifinals of the Omni Hotels Regional Championship on Monday afternoon at Saint Mary's College.

Freshmen K.C. Corkery (Manhattan Beach, CA) and James Pade (Woodside, CA), who are seeded seventh, defeated two seeded teams on Monday to reach the semifinals. Corkery and Pade beat 10th-seeded Sven Swinnen and Oded Teig of Oregon 8-4 in the third round and third-seeded Quinn Bouchard and Peter Malacek of Portland 8-6 in the quarterfinals.

Fifth-seeded Carter Morris (Washington, D.C.) and Sam Warburg (Sacramento, CA) opened their day with an injury walkover over Thomas Bieri and Manuel Kost of Oregon in the third round. Morris and Warburg then defeated Vincent Kubler and Nick Otte of Pacific 8-6 in the quarterfinals.

Stanford's third doubles entry --- sophomore Phil Sheng (Thousand Oaks, CA) and freshman Jon Wong (Los Altos, CA) --- were knocked out in third round action on Monday.

In Tuesday's 2:00 p.m. semifinals, Morris and Warburg will take on eighth-seeded Hector Almada and Stefan Suta of Fresno State and Corkery and Pade will meet second-seeded Ari Strasberg and Alex Vlaski of Washington. The doubles final of the Omni Hotels Regional Championship will follow at 3:15 p.m.

In Monday's singles action, Stanford senior David Martin (Tulsa, OK) reached the semifinals and senior Scott Lipsky (Merrick, NY) advanced to the quarterfinals.

The top-seeded Martin beat No. 9-16 seed Wayne Wong of California 6-3, 6-3 in the quarterfinals before falling to third-seeded Matt Hanlin of Washington 6-3, 6-4 in the semifinals. The fourth-seeded Lipsky dropped a 7-6 (2), 6-3 quarterfinal decision to fifth-seeded Balazs Veress of California.
