Stanford Baseball To Host Alumni Game On Saturday, November 2

Stanford, Calif. - Stanford Baseball will host its annual Alumni Game at Sunken Diamond on Saturday, November 2. An Old-Timers Game featuring a pair of Alumni teams with former Stanford players from the 1950's, 60's and '70's will take on each other to kick off the festivities at Noon. The 2003 Stanford Baseball team will take on a group of Cardinal Alumni from the 1970's through the 2002 team at 1:30 pm. Admission to the Alumni Game is free. Season ticket information for 2003 Stanford Baseball will be available and authentic Stanford Baseball jerseys for sale.
KZSU2 will begin an internet-only broadcast at 1:15 pm with Chad Goldberg behind the microphone.
'The Alumni Game is a great event and a really fun day,' said Stanford head coach Mark Marquess. 'We should have some fairly young recent Alumni to challenge our current team.'
Stanford Baseball has sent 59 players on to Major League Baseball and had 13 first round draft picks in the last 16 years. Stanford had 39 former players participate in organized professional baseball during the summer of 2002, including 10 that played in a Major League uniform.
Stanford has reached the College World Series each of the last four years for the first time in school history and was the CWS runner-up in 2000 and 2001. Last season, the Cardinal finished with a 47-18 overall record and tied for third at the College World Series.
Stanford won back-to-back NCAA championships in 1987 and 1988, has made 14 trips to the College World Series and won 18 conference titles.
Stanford will open its 2003 regular season at Santa Clara on Saturday, January 25, before the Broncos return the favor for Stanford's home opener the following day on Super Bowl Sunday, January 26. Stanford's 2003 schedule includes 34 home games and 23 contests against teams that participated in the 2002 NCAA Tournament, including a three-game series February 21-23 at defending national champion Texas.
First Team All-American Sam Fuld (Jr., OF) leads the 2003 returnees after setting a new Stanford single-season for hits with 110 last year. Fuld was also an All-Pac-10 choice, pacing the squad's regulars with a .375 batting average, while adding eight homers, 47 RBI and eight stolen bases. Ryan Garko (Sr., C, .314, 14 HR, 55 RBI, 2 SB) and Carlos Quentin (Jr., OF, .303, 12 HR, 54 RBI, 11 SB) also return after earning All-Pac-10 honors in 2002.
The 32-player roster includes a total of 14 returning letterwinners.
Stanford also features a large freshman class with 12 players joining the Cardinal in 2003. The group includes a pair of players drafted in the first five rounds of the 2002 MLB First-Year Player Draft in infielder John Mayberry (Seattle Mariners, first round) and left-handed pitcher Mark Romanczuk (Tampa Bay Devil Rays, fifth round).
The 2003 Stanford Baseball team opened fall practice on Saturday, October 12, and will continue through Sunday, November 3.
