Terrell Suggs Named Pac-10 Defensive Player Of The Week

TEMPE, Ariz. (www.TheSunDevils.com) -- Arizona State's Terrell Suggs has been named the Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Week after recording a team-high 12 tackles, 4.5 sacks and a forced fumble in ASU's 27-16 win over Washington on Saturday at Sun Devil Stadium.
Suggs, a junior from Chandler, Ariz., keyed the Arizona State defense that recorded a season-high eight sacks. The 4.5 sacks were a career high for Suggs and the most by a Sun Devil since Derrick Rodgers also had 4.5 in ASU's Rose Bowl clinching victory over California on Nov. 9, 1996. His game-high 12 tackles included 6.5 tackles for loss (-44 yards), 4.5 of which were quarterback sacks (-36 yards). The 4.5 quarterback sacks raised his total to 17.5 QB sacks for the year, which leads the nation and ties the NCAA single-season record. The Sun Devil defense limited Washington to 42 yards rushing and 252 yards total offense.
With four regular season game remaining in 2002, Suggs in rewriting the ASU record books during his junior campaign. His 17.5 sacks are approaching the school record of 19 set by Al Harris in 1978 and the Pac-10 record also of 19 set by Tedy Bruschi (Arizona) and Tim Ryan (USC). His 37.5 career sacks are 3.5 away from the school record of 41 set by Shante Carver (1990-93). With is 6.5 TFL vs. Washington, Suggs climbed from sixth all the way to tie for first on the single-season TFL list with 24 to tie Rodgers (1996) and is also tied for first with 58 in his career. He is a semifinalist for the inaugural Ted Hendricks Award presented to the nation's top defensive end.
The 16th-ranked (AP) Sun Devils (7-2, 4-0) travel to Pullman, Wash., this weekend for a showdown with Pac-10 co-leader Washington State. Saturday's game will be televised nationally on ABC with kickoff at 12:30 (PDT) and 1:30 here in the valley. The Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Week honor is the second for the Sun Devils in the last three weeks with senior linebacker Josh Amobi receiving the honor after ASU's 13-9 win over Oregon State (10/12).
